I have a comment about your discussion regarding the new federal hate crime legislation. There seemed to be some confusion regarding the purpose of the law, and whether it wasn’t already a crime to attack other people. Yes, it has always been a state crime to attack people, and these crimes are prosecuted in state courts. When a person is brought up on criminal charges, it is the People of the State who are prosecuting. Many states also have hate crime laws.

The difference in making this a federal law means that now the federal government can assist local and state agencies in investigating and prosecuting these crimes. So when an attack is suspected to be a hate crime, the full power and resources of the federal justice department can be used to gather evidence. And if the local or state agencies are unable or unwilling to prosecute in state court, the federal government can prosecute in federal court.

So this bill being passed isn’t an empty gesture as your discussion seemed to indicate; rather it puts real teeth into hate crime prosecution.

This is a comment to a comment that was made. I’m curious to know – How does finding life on other planets question religious beliefs? I haven’t read my Bible in years, but I do remember it saying God made humans in his image. Did I skip over the part where it said he made aliens in his image as well?

I have been listening to Mugglecast for four years, have listened to Imprint since the beginning, and have always been impressed by the engaging and intelligent discussions you guys have. I am sure you are an inspiration to young adults all over and I think you do an excellent job producing your shows each week and I look forward to each and every episode. So, when I heard you had a third podcast, Smartmouths, of course I had to listen.

Your conversation about the Black Barbie dolls during Episode #36: Korean Barbie was, interesting. I agree with Micah, sometimes people are way too sensitive and turn things into racial issues, when no racial bias exists, which I think is the case with the Barbies. As a Black woman, I was excited to hear about the dolls Mattel created and think they are long overdue. Their existence fills a void for young black girls who have been longing for a doll who resembles them as well as those who question their beauty because what they see in the mirror everyday is not accepted universally as beautiful. But unfortunately, the entire Black community does not feel the same as I do. There would be dissention regardless; if the Black Barbies hair were less straight, there would be a group of people angry with Mattel for suggesting that all Black people have “kinky” hair. It is a no-win situation.

Now, to my comment – at the end of the discussion, I was completely taken aback by comments that Micah and Elyssa had – and I am really trying to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume your comments were meant to be sarcastic. Micah said, “We have a Black president,” and Elyssa, who I have always thought to be the most intelligent host on your shows, followed with, “…racism is eradicated.”

Are you eff’ ing kidding me?

Now, I believe in free speech, but are you really that naïve to think that simply because we have a black president, racism is eradicated? If anything, it is thriving. I mean, even the secret service is strained partially in part due to an unprecedented number of death threats against the president (because he is Black) and a rise in racist hate groups. (Source: http://www.boston.com/news/nation/washington/articles/2009/10/18/secret_service_under_strain_as_leaders_face_more_threats/?page=full)

I can post statistic after statistic to show you that racism exists but I will not. You simply have to Google racially biased crimes in the US or do a simple search for hate groups, (Here’s a map: http://www.splcenter.org/intel/map/hate.jsp)to realize we’re not all waiting with bated breath for the moment when we can hold hands and sing Kumbyah. Sad to say, never going to happen.

Racism exists against Blacks, Whites, Koreans, Hispanics, Jews, Indians, etc., I personally know Black people who refuse to patronize a business because it’s owned by someone who is not Black and I have worked with people who smiled in my face every day but secretly hated my guts because I am Black.

It’s true, we’ve come a long way, and it took this country a hard road to get where were are, but there is still much farther to go. The fact is, racism is alive and living in this country and you’re foolish to think otherwise.

  • wtf?

    Keshia – THEY WERE KIDDING

  • Elysa

Keshia: I agree with you entirely. My remark about racism no longer existing now that we have a black president was a sarcastic jab at those who say that in seriousness. Watching as much cable news as I do, I’m constantly flabbergasted when I hear an anchor or commentator use the fact that we have Obama as President to suggest that the U.S. still doesn’t have a lot of work to do to combat prejudice. So I was being facetious, meaning that your giving me the benefit of the doubt paid off. ;)

I’d never endorse that kind of ignorance seriously. No worries, though – sometimes the sense of humor in this show is an acquired taste.

  • Erica

    keshia, you wrote a novel

  • Keshia

@ Erica – just a short novel. LOL. It seemed much shorter when I typed it in a word doc.

Elysa, thanks for clarifying. I stand corrected and take back my accusations. The show is much different from your other podcasts and will take some getting used to – but I will continue to listen with a more open mind.
