Smart Mouths #57: Britain or Britton?
by Penny on Apr.19, 2010, under Episodes
Well what do you know? We came back for another week. How could we not? We have a free platform to spew our ridiculous opinions here. Join Andrew, Elysa, Micah and Penny for a ginormous episode of Smart Mouths.
In this week’s show:
-Andrew plays us a piece of music that brings tears to our eyes. Literally.
-Elysa makes a sentimental speech
-Virginia writes some revisionist history
-Volcanic ash caused UK flight bans. This in turn causes Andrew and Elysa to fight with Penny about the ramifications.
-The UK general elections are coming up in May. We play an important game to educate ourselves and all of you about that country and its Parliament.
-NBC doing poorly. This time not because of the Leno/Conan debacle but the Winter Olympics.
-25 years till NASA goes to Mars? Elysa (our resident NASA fangirl) is ecstatic!
-Dr. Smart Mouths makes its return and tackles graduations, home schooling and the prom.
-Backwashes address iPods in class and Team LoCo.
-WTF news. Two Words: Killer Boobs (and not the good kind.)

Regarding Penny’s comments on people stranded in Europe, BULLSHIT! If they really want to get out they will find a way to get down to the other countries so they can go back home to see their “Dieing father” or “Mother’s funeral” or “Child who just took their first step and said their first word” and if i got stuck in Europe I woudn’t be complaining i would be fricking touring the everthing and running up my parent’s credit card!

Wow Lydia, I’m sure your parents are proud.
What your very very mature attitude forgot to realize is that there is a delay out of the whole Europe now. So, it won’t be that easy to just “get out” by going “down” to the other countries.

Not everyone stranded in airports have the luxury to frolic around in the English countryside. Some people have real jobs where they will not get paid for the extra week they’re off, on top of that hotels are charging increasingly ridiculous prices, just because they can. Thank you Penny, for being the only adult.
http://www.metronews.ca/toronto/live/article/506216–help-me-god-volcano-flight-chaos-pummeling-passengers-pocketbooks-leaving-many-broke–page1
Excerpts from the above article:
“On Friday, they found out their Qantas flight from Sydney to Britain had been cancelled thanks to a volcano erupting in Iceland. So the Cambridge couple and their two teenage sons squeezed into a 150 Australian dollar ($138) hotel room to wait out the night. On Saturday, the hotel raised the price of the same room to AU$350 – simply because it could, Andrew said ruefully. After endless negotiations, the hotel brought the price back down to AU$160, but the family, broke and frustrated, opted to move Sunday to a hostel.”
“Many stranded travellers are also fretting over lost paychecks. Tom Napier – an American stuck in Oslo, where he had been visiting a friend – said his prolonged absence from his job as a high school history teacher in Bernards, New Jersey, will “more than likely” affect his salary.
“I am a little afraid that my pay will be docked,” said Napier, 35. “I also have tutoring jobs during the week that usually supplement my salary. That will be gone. And even if I don’t get my pay docked, all my days off will have to be charged as sick days.”"
“”Yesterday, we had a hotel room at 250 euros. At midday, it was 460 euros, and in the evening, the price was 800 euros…”

I think I’d rather be stranded with my flight cancelled than in a crashing plane. After the tragedy with the Polish government, I’m glad they’re being safe.

Just want to say to Lydia, if you had a “dying father” or “mother’s funeral” I don’t think you “wouldn’t be complaining” and “fricking touring the everthing and running up my parent’s credit card!”

Most who people who want to go home want to go home, because of actual family issues or work or the fact they can’t afford to stay there any longer.
umm.. that’s all.. awesome show guys, thanks for covering some UK stuff

I blame the fact that Facebook changed the option from ‘fan’ the page to ‘like’ the page on Smart Mouths. (:

I’m a LIBRARIAN & I hate that stupid G. Washington story! Plus it is the Library that sets the policy, not necessarily the librarians. At my branches, there is a cap on fines so late charges per item don’t go past like $15. But if you lose a book, you need to pay the replacement cost. Also, not everyone who works at a library is a librarian. I had to get a master’s degree to have that title

First of all guys, thankyou so much for talking about some UK news xD Even though you didn’t go into much detail, you at least tried. However, I’m sure a LOT of your listeners would love it if you continued to talk about the elections (which are on the 6th of May).
For more information, the BBC website is fantastic. This compares the main viewpoints of each party:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/election_2010/8515961.stm and there are ‘party profile’ links at the bottom of the page which are also really helpful.
Also, you guys could do another fun quiz by going to this site:
)
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/election_2010/8515961.stm
and finding out which party you match up best with (you have to enter a postcode, but CH3 8DA or something along those lines will work
Lastly, you can see the first televised election debate the country has ever had here on youtube:
This debate has really got a lot of younger people into the election and politics, it was a big talking point afterwards even among people my age (15-16) which is pretty unusual =P
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rk5HvJmy_yg
It’s about an hour and 30 mins and is betwee the leaders of the 3 main parties, I highly reccomend you watch it, you certainly don’t have to be that politically minded to enjoy it, although I’m sure Elysa will find it extra fun
I think a lot of your UK listeners would fan themselves if yu guys did a discussion on this after watching that and possibly taking the quiz, so PLEASE consider it!! <3
