I’m sorry, but the ‘Political Bitches’ rant is.. well… boring. I know I probably am the only one, but does anyone else end up fast-forwarding it?
March 16th, 2009 on 8:45 AM
Much better than last week, guys. Except I find Political Bitches segments boring. It’s just not my cup of tea, to be frank.
Interesting news this week and a good discussion on WTF news.
Sometimes I think you talk about blowjobs too much. But whatevs.
March 16th, 2009 on 4:05 PM
Hey guys – great episode! Just thought I’d let you know – your new segment is a game I’ve played before too but we always called it “Two Truths & a Lie”. Just another option for you!
Keep up the great episodes
March 16th, 2009 on 7:58 PM
in response to what bob said about the poltial bitches rant, i dont find it boring that i have 2 fast foward. i just find that its trying 2 hard but i thought this weeks was better than last weeks & it led 2 a great discussion. this episode had me laughing out loud multiple times for about 5 minute straight… i couldnt stop. seriously, you guys & girls are all hysterical. i feel like greg and kevin are hardly ever on the show. get them on, please. want to hear thier views and voices too! penny, dont feel bad about zelda being your middle name cause my middle name sucks too and so does most of the popualtions. cant believe matt use to stuff his clothes. if i were mom, i would also want to send him to a shrink. seriously something wrong with the boy… haha dont worry, matt, i still love you. awwww. this weeks wtf?!? news stories were very enjoyable, micah, i enjoyed the vidoe game rape one… and great hosting, andrew. cant wait for next week….
March 16th, 2009 on 9:53 PM
My mum does that new segment of telling one lie in her staff room on a Friday. I concocted the name ‘me, myself and lie’ for it. I think it’s catchy anyway.
I must say you have a brilliant podcast but I do not like the political bitches segment either. I’m not quite sure why which is annoying for you guys. I think it just doesn’t interest me considering it’s too removed from my news. I live in Australia and hearing you talk about gun control is so removed from me. I cannot see why owning a gun should even be a right but then again, I suppose it is America where the sterotype is ‘violent and stupid.’ I know that wasn’t part of that segment but I used that as an example to highlight my issue since I never make it through the political bit.
I don’t know where I’m going with this.
Good job. I suppose this is where I name my favourites… Matt, Travis and Glenn.
*ahem*
(What’s a bet someone will think I’m an idiot?)
March 17th, 2009 on 12:44 AM
What’s the deal with the home-made sex toy? A saw?
Darwin Awards, anybody?
(Well, it would be if she died! – Which thankfully didn’t happen… but it’s still kind of stupid.)

One of the reasons I enjoy listening to SMP is for current political events and hearing issues from an educated, younger point of view. Laura, in particular has consistently given intelligent input since I began listening to MC 3 years ago. Politics must be part of a relevant podcast.
That said, here is my take on “Political Bitches”. This is a case of Right Idea/Wrong Format. Thought provoking, homorous commentary needs to be presented in a more subtle manner and with the feel of an open dialogue. I think the reason people reacted strongly this week is because it came across ‘condescending’ or ‘listen to our script and if you do not think as we think, your the problem’.. or, dare I write it… “Bush-like” I believe this is why the immediate reaction from all the hosts was defensive which did eventually lead to interesting commentary after an awkward transition.
Discussing the fluff of media is very relevant, topical, important and of-the-moment. Keep P.B. but allow for an approach that is more inviting and less biting.
March 17th, 2009 on 5:05 PM
Laura was the game you were talking about called “Road Rash”? I fee like I’m the only one that ever played that game :[
I really liked the show, keep it up.
March 17th, 2009 on 5:39 PM
Love the show. I think all the segments are great. Others have said the Political segment is boring, but I don’t think so. Loved the new segment! It was fun to try and guess what was true or not. Love the show and the hosts!
March 18th, 2009 on 10:41 AM
Great job this week, and I love the diversity of topics, although as a political nerd I am especially fond of the political bitches (this week was not only very funny but provoked an interesting and fairly well-rounded discussion). I am also a big fan of the WTF section, and was thoroughly amused that the George Clooney-tofu story was not only on your podcast, but was also the answer to Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me’s (NPR news quiz show, which I listen to via their podcast and is hilarious) “Bluff the Listener” game, where they give 3 stories from the news and only one is true. Since I had already listened to Smart Mouths, I knew that the George Clooney-tofu was correct. Just wanted to share.
March 18th, 2009 on 4:22 PM
I wanted to respond to the comments on gun control. As a somewhat conservative gun owner that is able to refrain from shooting everyone that makes me angry I feel that I should point out that any amendment that made guns illegal would probably go over as well as prohibition did. The plain fact of the matter is that anyone that wants a gun will get one whether it’s legal or not. Making guns illegal will just give organized crime something else to sell. I also think it should be pointed out (and was somewhat mentioned on the show) that people kill people, not guns. You might as well make axes, knives, fertilizer, cars, etc, etc, etc illegal while your making guns, they kill people too,
March 19th, 2009 on 10:43 AM
Great episode, as usual guys!!
I saw that a few people have said they don’t like the political bitches segment, but I love it! I never used to be very ‘into’ politics, so you’d probably expect me not to like it, but I think that is really funny and clever. I especially liked last episode’s Obama one =]
That said, I think the good thing about this podcast is it does have something for everyone, so I don’t feel like you should get rid of PB just because some people don’t like it – not that their opinion doesn’t matter, but if you have a mixture of things some people will always disagree on what is best.
My only criticism would be, in the round-up I feel like you should be talking about the ‘bigger’ news stories. They don’t necessarily have to be serious ones, but I think that some of them would have fitted better in WTF News. I find SM really good because, as terrible as it sounds, I really don’t follow the news much, unless it’s on the radio on the way to school, etc, so your podcast is great for keeping me informed!!
Love you guys and your podcasts, here’s hoping this one runs for just as long as Mugglecast!!!
March 19th, 2009 on 1:16 PM
All you guys who don’t like the Political segment you are just proving the stuff Laura and Elisa were talking about. You don’t like the political part of the show but like the pop culture stuff, which is exactly what they were talking about.
March 19th, 2009 on 7:24 PM
Great comments on our Political Bitches segment, guys – we’re all about this feedback! It’s some of the best we’ve gotten thus far.
To those who don’t like it: if it’s because you just don’t care for politics or politically-minded issues, there’s (sadly) nothing we can do about that. But for those who offered us constructive criticism, thanks! We’re seriously considering everything you had to say.
To those who like it: EPIC WIN, GUYS. Thank you so much! We’re glad so many of you seem to really appreciate and understand satire. For me, it’s the coolest part of the show to write – I get to pretend for a few minutes that I’m Jon Stewart’s protege. (*snort* Don’t I wish?)
To Sam: Thank you for REALLY “getting” it. Major kudos.
March 19th, 2009 on 9:38 PM
This episode was HILARIOUS! I love the new segment: Believe it or Not because it lets us find out alot more about our LOVEABLE hosts! Matt’s was both hilarious and also kind of weird. But I have to say…every week I always fast forward past the Politics and World News segment and the Political Bitches rant because it’s kind of boring. But I did listen to this weeks and it was alot better because all the co-hosts got involved, but the rant is just too repetitive for me even though I love Laura and Elysa…they’re two of my absolute faves! But I can’t wait for the next episode! Keep up the good work guys!!
March 20th, 2009 on 9:18 PM
That new segment you played i play it all the time with my friends. We call it two truths and a lie.
March 21st, 2009 on 2:19 PM
I disagree with the football employee being fired over a Facebook comment. Its happening over and over again. If you do a Google search employers are firing people right and left over what is especially free speech (and should be protected as such). I believe in America we have a thing called the Bill of Rights and we have a right to do something as long as that right doesn’t grossly infringe upon the rights of another. Is it so much to ask that people are fired only because of either financial reason or a reason that genuinely effects (Significantly) job performance? I would like to think that I’m a fair and just person (I’m a Hufflepuff for all you HP fans). There comes a point when we have to start protecting people’s rights.
March 21st, 2009 on 2:28 PM
You all are doing a great job. I would like to add another comment about Elysa and Laura’s commentary. You are totally right about Obama. He needs to start injecting positivity into the hearts and minds of the American people. It really does help. At least part of the problem with our consumer and investment sector is confidence. We need to encourage people to trust again and start spending, loaning, ect. There was a story about a teenage boy a few years ago that would buy a stock online and then go to all the message boards and say how great that specific stock is going to do. What happened? The stock did great because people went and bought it and raised its value. The kid made thousands of dollars doing this and even friends, family, and neighbors invested through his methods. I believe if Obama has a more positive outlook we will have a more positive outcome. Hope is contagious.
March 21st, 2009 on 2:40 PM
Sorry for all the comments, but I had a lot to say and thought it would be best to kind of split it up into sections. I’m a long time listener of Mugglecast and a recent fan of SM. Again, good job guys.
I wanted to say something about the Canadian guy who decapitated another on a greyhound bus. I really do not think he should be released, probably ever. What law makers need to understand is it isn’t just about the individual. You are taking a huge gamble with other people’s lives when you let someone who is potentially dangerous out of jail, prison, mental health ward, ect. He may not be guilty based on insanity, but his right to be treated fairly doesn’t even shine a candle to the rights of the individuals who would be placed in possible danger. The man should be supervised 24/7 for the rest of his life.
I also wanted to say something about Fred Phelps. I myself am a Christian and yes I don’t think Gay marriage is right, however I am a fair and just person. Gay marriage does not grossly infringe on my right to function as a straight Christian male, or anyone else for that matter. If I were a judge I would allow gay people to get married and have all the rights and privilege under the law as everyone else. Ultimately their lifestyle is between them and/or their God. Not many Christians even know about the following story because its mostly apocryphal and cut out of the bible with the exception of Jude, but the Arch Angel Michael and Satan had a dispute over Moses. Instead of condemning Satan Michael merely asked God to be the judge between him and Satan. This says a lot if even an Arch Angel is hesitant to judge the adversary, let alone us humans.
March 21st, 2009 on 10:04 PM
Where are Eric and Kevin? They haven’t been on since episode 1. Anyways, LOVE THE SHOW! Can’t wait for the next one!
March 22nd, 2009 on 1:38 AM
Elysa, I don’t think it’s fair to say that people don’t “appreciate and understand satire” if they don’t like political bitches.
I feel like it’s too forceful and generalised.
People are angry when there’s no news. I mean, we talk about the news amongst us and learn about genocides in religion. It’s encouraged. There was outrage when one of the papers published a soap opera lesbian plotline on the cover.
Thankyou for explaining why Americans don’t seem to know anything outside of America. I’ve had afew friends go over and apparently it’s amazing what people will believe. Then again, who’s coming back telling people about the smart American. That’s no fun. The sterotype is so much better. Eddie Ifft made that film ‘America the punchline.’ Bagging it is too easy. It must be hard how consistently shit it is. Thankyou media.
Once we had an exchange student and when asked why she came to Australia she said ‘Because they speak American.’ “No honey we speak english.’ That was quite a gentle example. Sigh.
March 22nd, 2009 on 1:41 AM
Had to add that our PM told us this would be the worst year ever. What a g-up.
He also used shitstorm to describe the economic crisis. Haha.
K-Rudd does a’ight.
March 22nd, 2009 on 5:08 AM
Firstly, to the ‘conservative gun owner, you compare guns to cars, knives, fertilizer to guns. Cars, knives and fertilizers all have their own purposes which do not revolve around killing or harming people. I don’t think I need to go through what cars and fertilizer is used for.
Secondly, to Sam who ‘really gets it’, just because we don’t like the Political Bitches rant does not mean we don’t enjoy political discussion.I may be the only one with this opinion, but I don’t like anti-establishment rants being obnoxiously thrown in my face in a pre-pared monologue. I’d much prefer a discussion. And that also doesn’t mean we like pop-culture and find politics boring, speaking for myself, I couldn’t care less about Britney Spears or Lindsay Lohan. So refrain from stereo-typing us as the people who were referred to in the pod as not knowing real news from pop-culture. Ok, that was the longest post I’ve ever made…
March 22nd, 2009 on 5:12 AM
Wow, there are so many grammatical errors in my post. Jeez… I’m an Aussie by the way, so as previously mentioned, I am pretty surprised at the problems guns have caused in America.
outofyoghurt, do you watch Rove? Don’t you just love the “Kevin Rudd, PM’ segments and K-Rudd’s laugh…
March 22nd, 2009 on 2:30 PM
Okay, Screw, Marry, Kill: Winnie the Pooh, Voldemort, or Tinkerbell
March 22nd, 2009 on 3:45 PM
To the other Aussie posters out there, especially outofyoghurt, Kevin Rudd PM on Rove is h.i.l.a.r.i.o.u.s. Shitstorm.
And kassidy, that Screw, Marry, Kill is just… wrong.
March 22nd, 2009 on 5:28 PM
Hey guys (and girls [for those fucking obsessed with being P.C.]), I just thought i would comment on something in the show. The discussion on stem cell research reminded me of why i think most people in the world are idiots. I was pleased to here the thought vaguely mentioned in the show, but i would like to make it clearer here. There is a very simple solution to every problem labeled as pertaining to “ethics” (well maybe not all) : its simple, if you have no problem with giving your embryos away for stem cell research, then all the power to you, and everyone out there (*ahem* christian fundamentalist hypocrites) in their houses sitting on their couches saying “that’s wrong!!” can fucking deal with it. its not effecting them in anyway, its not harming them in any way. Nobody has the right EVER to use force of any kind in anyway against anyone else (except for self-defense obviously). OK PEOPLE??? I have never been able to understand why people cant just leave other people alone! Let them live their lives! Live and let live.
Peace
March 23rd, 2009 on 7:40 AM
Hey guys, awesome show, Andrew you’re totally my favorite!
I just wanted to respond to your Politics and World News segment this week. You discussed stem cell research and how Obama has overturned the Bush policy on it. Now what I’m pretty sure none of you mentioned is that it has been discovered in the past few years, not sure exactly when, that the properties in stem cells that are useful for research and medical advancements are also obtainable from certain adult skin cells, thus making the research possible without destroying embryos/fetuses/unborn children. Now I’m a teenager, not a scientist, so I don’t know how accurate this is or how it works, but I’d heard about it quite a lot. Just wondering what your thoughts were. As I said, I love your show, especially the fact that even as someone who doesn’t necessarily agree with a lot of the views on the show, I can still listen and be both enlightened and entertained.
Peace
Talia
March 23rd, 2009 on 1:18 PM
Hey, all. Love the podcast.
Just wanted to make a comment about the lie game. I didn’t really like it. It reminds me of a game we used to play in elementary school. Screw, marry, kill was way more fun to hear. Plus, the bitches rant was, well, boring. (Sorry!) I think the problem is that it was way too long. I find that sarcasm is best served often, but in small doses.
March 23rd, 2009 on 3:03 PM
Where’s episode 7??? <3

About the whole gun control issue. I agree with Micah (I believe he said it) that yes, we do have the right to bare arms, but the 2nd Amendment was written when we needed a militia to keep the country safe. This is no longer the case, we have a military force now. Times changes, and the wonderful part of our government system is that it can be changed, with the changing times. I feel that gun control is an issue that needs to be looked at, most likely guns should not be made illegal (that would never pass) but I feel that stricter laws should come about to control who are purchasing guns. I agree that people kill people, but people with guns kill people a hell of a lot easier then people with “axes, knives, fertilizer, cars, etc, etc, etc…”
And Matt. Don’t feel bad about still sucking your thumb. I sucked my thumb till 6th grade (publicly) and until 9th grade (privately). Good to hear I’m not the only one. lol
But good job overall guys. I enjoy the podcast and hearing some intellectual conversation. Political Bitches is funny and I love satire. Keep it up!
March 26th, 2009 on 8:53 AM
Interesting discussion on stem cell research and ethics. Part of your discussion reminded me of the Ugly series written by Scott Westerfeld. In this society, which is thousands of years after “we” were here, everyone under goes surgery to make them pretty at the age of 16. But how far were the developers of this procedure willing to go to make a peaceful society? If anyone is looking for a good book series, I recommend this one (and anything by Westerfeld)!
March 26th, 2009 on 5:51 PM
On the stem cell/cloning subject, you should look at “Double Identity” by Margaret Peterson Haddix. It is about a girl who is cloned to be exactly like a sister she never knew she had, who had died. It really deals with what had happened about her and how her life was effected. I also agree that the Ugly series by Scott Westerfeld is great.
March 26th, 2009 on 5:59 PM
I forgot to add a point our school book club had made when we read “Double Identity”. One idea was would it be right if we cloned a great person, like Einstein or Mozart or Newton, to make great accomplishments again. Someone brought up that since they had, for example, already discovered general relativity in their lifetime, so what would be left to discover? The child clone would obviously be brought up with great expectations. What if they didn’t like science? What if they liked art or music or something else? We can’t expect great things from a clone of a great person because part of that great person is their personality, which was formed from their life. A clone would have a completely different childhood and life than the original person.

I just wanted to comment on the Eagles employee who got fired. I think that’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. I work as an usher for the San Francisco 49ers and while there is a policy to not make comments to the media, an employee should not be fired for speaking their mind about the team. I can honestly say that I’ve had discussions with many other ushers about how the 49ers suck now, I’ve even discussed this with fans. I’ve posted bulletins on myspace and blogs about how much the 49ers have been ****ing up. I think Micah said “don’t bite the hand that feeds you” but honestly speaking, there are only 10 home games a year and the 49ers don’t pay me enough money to keep me from speaking my mind about the team. Just because we might be bashing our team, doesn’t mean that we still aren’t die hard fans. It’s our love for our teams and our desire to see them do better than makes us speak up about things we don’t like that the organization is doing. The Eagles employee who was fired even said that even though he was fired he’s still an Eagles fan through and through. That’s a true fan to the fullest, not a bandwagoner.
