Smart Mouths #61: Will Grayson, Will Grayson with John Green
by Elysa on May.16, 2010, under Episodes
HOLY HELLBASKET, John Green is on Smart Mouths?! Hath hell frozen over? Does Penny love Oprah? Does Elysa hate Glambert? Because this is some earth-shattering, paradigm-shifting, apocalyptic stuff. I repeat: John Green – THE John Green, a legit author, viral phenomenon extraordinaire – is on the show this week to discuss his book Will Grayson, Will Grayson.
Wait – this doesn’t mean we’re earning credibility, does it? No? Okay good.
- We open the book discussion with a few standard questions – the only time in this interview where we aren’t actively making asses of ourselves.
- Discussion of the Epic as Hell (minus the fire-and-brimstone) novel is very thematic, with particular focus on the interconnectedness of truth and love.
- Penny pays Elysa the most profound compliment of her life. And that includes the time Matt called her his ho.
- Also: How can we be fabulous? John answers with his usual Jedi-like wisdom and wit.
- Last Words with John Green: A new game in which we guess what celebrities’ last words will be. Up on the pyre: Bill Clinton, Lady Gaga, Barney the Dinosaur… yeah, we go there.
For the whole three people out there who haven’t heard of John the Wise and/or read his novels, check him out. You won’t be disappointed, unless you’ve got a pet peeve against killer writing skillz. His website is http://www.sparksflyup.com/, his awesome youtube is http://www.youtube.com/vlogbrothers and he’s @realjohngreen over on Twitter.
And in special thanks to John for making an appearance on our (let’s be honest) less-than-inspiring production, we’re asking our listeners to donate to his charity of choice: The American Red Cross Nashville Relief Fund . For our part, we’ve already donated $200 – a figure John has graciously offered to match – so let’s play a philanthropic game of Follow the Leader, shall we? Donate Here. Come on now. Don’t be a bitchsqueeler.

Awesome! Downloading now, can’t wait to hear his perspective. I’ve been unable to go to any of the tour stops for WGWG, so it’ll be great. (:

I’m one of the three who haven’t read the book, but seeing his charity of choice (I live right near Nashville), I’m motivated.
Can’t wait to read and then listen. (:

Awesome. I loved this book so much. Made me LOL at least three times a chapter. Green and Levithan are an amazing duo. Totally got to meet them at the LA Times Festival of Books this year

I just got done listening to this episode and I LOVED it. John Green is one of my favorite people of all time, and the ideas and opinions he had on the book and life were really insightful. I love that you guys could have him on, and I loved all the thought provoking discussion you all had.
This is probably my favorite episode of Smart Mouths by far
Also, I loved the new game. I had many laughs listening to it, and Elysa’s quote about Luna was hysterical XD

This really was a great episode. They should do these type of book club episodes more often. Authors like John Green just add to the ‘epicness’ of Smart Mouths!

I promised myself I wouldn’t read Will Grayson, Will Grayson until after exams. Now I have to refrain from this display of awesome too!! Pity my poor soul!

The SM podcasters and John Green are more or less my favorite people in the entire world, and I knew that a podcast with all of them would be fantastic, but I was still blown away. As much as I adored many of the episodes in which I died laughing (usually in a very public place) this is definitely my all-time favorite episode.

I knew I should have gotten this book when I had the chance…Now I have to wait until I can get to a bookstore…I do love John Green though, and I have all three of his other novels. I just haven’t read Will Grayson, Will Grayson yet. I look forward to being able to listen to this, though.

OMG! This was such an amazing episode! If there was a Smart Mouths Wall of Fame, this would definately be on it. But I was wondering… why is this episode marked #61 instead of Book Club Episode #3?
May 19th, 2010 on 9:01 PM
Awesome ep.
Just bought the book. Can’t wait to read it.
Question? Is this the episode for the week or is this for the bookclub version only?
Thanks

Wow, guys. If at first I thought that I wouldn’t be interested in this episode, I definitely don’t think that now! I did like the first book club episodes that y’all did, but inviting an author to join the book club adds a whole new level of awesomeness to what y’all do. I’ve heard of John Green before – never read his books, but now I definitely will. He’s a really funny person, his book sounds interesting, and y’all really did a good job with this episode.

What great timing–I had reserved WGWG from the library right after Penny had recommended it on a recent episode, and it just came in, so I got to read it right when this episode came out…1st, Penny thank you so much for recommending it, I really enjoyed it, and 2nd, how great are you guys for getting John Green on the show to discuss his book? As always, you guys are fabulous–keep up the great job, I love you guys !!
