Smart Mouths #68: Fortnightly
by Penny on Aug.02, 2010, under Episodes
Welcome back for the latest episode of the quality news and entertainment showgram we call Smart Mouths. Join Andrew, Elysa, Greg, Matt and Micah for an extraordinarily wonderful and tame (READ: they made editing easy for me this week) show this week.
In this episode:
-Announcement about the show’s regularity (and no we’re not talking about taking fiber here).
-In related news, What does fortnight mean? Here’s a definition.
-Wikileaks lived up to its name and to quote Elysa, “Sh*t aint right.”
-The ICC finally grew a pair and issued an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on the grounds of genocide. Problem is that Chad is being the wussy weird kid he always was. Dammit, Chad.
-Shirley Sherrod vs. Andrew Breitbart. Point, Sherrod.
-Greg has done our forefathers proud by fulfilling a civic obligation.
-Idol Chatter: this group thinks the show is done for. See ya on X Factor.
-Anne Rice quits Christianity. If it were only that easy, Anne.
-Backwashes all focus on the news last week about the Mosque being built at ground zero.
-Micah and the kids are back with WTF News (yayyyyyy!).

Ok guys, I love you, but you all need to stop sucking Simon Cowell’s balls. It’s starting to get old.
Here in the UK, where Simon used to hunt for his next cash-cow before he realsied that people in the states are even more hungry for this sort of thing, as awful as these shows are (in my opinion, and many other people’s) they and the hype surrounding them are almost always about the actual contestants. Sure, the hosts are important, but they’re not the deciding factor of whether or not people watch the show.
And I don’t know where this wholesale adoration for Cowell sprung from. Sure, over here a lot of people find him fairly funny, or used to, but now it’s very clear to most that he’s just an arrogant, moneygrabbing c-word who makes a living off making other people feel bad. I’m suprised at you for being taken in by him – surely a group of intelligent people like yourselves can find something more amusing than a middle-aged talent show judge slinging cookie-cutter insults at everyone he meets?!
And as for the other hosts, Steve Tyler shouldn’t demean himself by taking part in such shows. He was the frontman for Aerosmith, a massively succesful band – so you might well scoff, Matt, but he’s WELL above this sort of thing!
aaand end anti-cowell rant.

In the word “almohada” the “h” isn’t pronounced in Spanish… Laura can confirm that. I still LOLed at Alohomora

I think this ‘rabbit, rabbit’ thing is a bit more known in the UK. It’s meant to be the first thing you say out loud at the beggining of the month, that’s what I got told when I was younger anyway. There’s also another one I know about called ‘White rabbit, white rabbit’ this one is for someone getting married. It’s the first thing they say at the start of every month to ensure that they have good luck for their wedding day. I’ve been saying ‘rabbit rabbit’ for years, not that it works! :}

Yeah, I have to second magicmarkers. I personally cannot stand the show and Simon, and it makes me sad how much entertainment people get out of watching the hurt reaction in others when he chews them out. Call me a softie but I’ve never been a fan. His role in the show is to bully, I just can’t enjoy it.

I thought “rabbit rabbit” stole all the luck of everyone who hears it. Sneaky bastards, with thousands of listeners.

I am so sad about the fortnight thing. I look forward to SM each week, and these last three that I had to go through without an episode were pretty much unbearable. I think that you should keep them weekly, and make them two hours longer. But that won’t happen. I just hope that once you guys aren’t as busy someday in the future, you can change it back to the regular show. I’ve been kind of dreading this moment for a while now though, ever since you ended the golden age of Smart Mouths by changing the format of the episodes from segmented to non-segmented.
But anyways, I’m not even sure what I’m talking about any more, so I should probably say good bye. Good bye!

a fortnight is every two weeks. (I learned that from harry potter <3) And it makes me sad
But I understand why you are doing it, and I respect the desicion. Good luck with school! <3

Maybe instead of only doing Smart Mouths every 2 weeks, you should stop doing Imprint. I love you guys, and it pains me to see you trying to find any sort of meaning in the Twilight books. Lost cause.
But anyway, I know intellectually that you are just busy, but it still feels like you’re doing fewer eps. because you’ve lost the enthusiasm.

My only disappointment with this show is that you guys are turning it into your other podcasts- by which i mean, that you are very slowly decreasing when your episodes will come out. I know that you guys are busy with a lot of stuff like everyone else, however, if you feel that you cannot meet the demands of a weekly show then you need to take on some additional podcasters so that you could switch off who will podcast the show each week like you did in the beginning to ensure that the podcast could be put out each week. smart mouths is a great podcast that works great with a weekly show format since there is so much going on in the world and if you miss a week or two, then it feels like you are so far behind and am less likely to listen because the show will be already old news.
August 15th, 2010 on 8:24 PM
rawr! So sad you guys are going to fortnightly schedule!!!
SM is the greatest way for me to start each and every week. If you guys are going to go to a two weekly schedule, maybe some more YouTube videos???
August 16th, 2010 on 1:38 AM
wtf.
how can you guys have never heard the word ‘fortnightly’ before?
i learnt that word, in like, year one.
huh.
maybe it’s like more of an australian/ british word.
August 17th, 2010 on 2:35 AM
Is ‘fortnight’ not a word used in the U.S.? Or is all this not understanding it a big joke? Anyway, in the U.K. it’s used all the time and I much prefer it to ‘biweekly’ because I always think that means twice a week- which btw, I would prefer for Smart Mouths instead of fortnightly
. I thought one of the best things about having 7 hosts was that it would be possible to do weekly shows even if people couldn’t make it. I’m sure you guys have considered all of this and so I’m not gonna bitch. But these fortnightly shows had better be good..
x
