Here is a link to an article from 2006. Apparently “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” is a sort of prequel to the book. Not that it’s a good idea anyway, but I just thought you should know:http: //tinyurl.com/csfbgc

I can’t wait for “Where the Wild Things Are”!!

Listening to the show, and I loved “Love You Forever” when I was little. You can find it at (Barnes & Noble) http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Love-You-Forever/Robert-Munsch/e/9780920668375/?itm=1 .

I took the narcissistic quiz, and even I beat Matt Britton with a score of 21. And let me just say that I am a girl, and apparently I am a bit too self-obsessed.

As a borderline atheist, I find it extremely disturbing that evolution is still being contested. All of modern biology is based on evolution, and many scientific discoveries (including most medicines) depends on biology, and therefore evolution. In my high school (in Texas), there is no way to get through school without accepting evolution, even though our teachers never mention creationism really, because there is no way to move forward in science otherwise.

I agree with Laura (I believe Laura said this?) that parents who find evolution controversial shouldn’t send their kids to public schools, and stop taking medicine since God is punishing them anyways if they get sick. Death, after all, is just the Lord calling you home, and sickness is His punishment for your sins. Am I right? I wish I was only sarcastic, but I’m under the impression that it’s true. ><

yay!! A new episode! I took that test and I scored a 4…not very high. :(

The thing with Tom was pretty funny – he didn’t sound that creepy… =/ Though maybe I just hang out with weirdos.

Loved the show! Keep it up!

I coudn’t imagine arguing about Evolution. I know maybe one slightly religious person and even they believe in parts of it. And taking Biology it’s a pretty big part of your studies. I asked my teacher the other day if I answer with ‘God did it’ will I get full marks? She just looked at me and said ‘the exam markers would hunt you down’ no needless to say I won’t be doing it any time soon.

Just found a good WTF news story…

    http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/795392/pimp-paid-prostitute-with-chicken-snacks

I think the link says it all. Yes, she was selling herself for chicken nuggets. That’s not even the good bit of the chicken!

Let’s face it, when he said “So, what’s your name?”, Tom was lookin’ to hook up! No Ifs Ands or Butts about it.

    Go Vermont!
I was reading an article about gay rights in my country not long ago and it was just auful. I didn’t realise that they had practicaly no rights. They can register- but the law is such a piece of crap (it does not offer a relative status and it completley ignores social security… so there’s really no point of it). So if they have a kid (you can’t adopt), one is the parent while the other one has no rights and if the listed parent dies… They can take away the kid. It’s horrible, and any progress with this law is painfuly slow. Every goverment promises something, but by the time the election comes no one wants to get into something so ‘controversial’.

Oh and just one more thing… There are so many people like Khmer Rouge leader that are just hiding in plain sight.
Just remember Radovan Karadžic. He was living in Wien and no one was the wiser, he was even vacationing in Croatia! I know it’s not the same, but just pointing out, that a lot of people are still on the run from their past.

Oh… I do not want to be rude, but I find it… funny and disturbing that evolution in school is a debate. I am an Atheist, but facts are facts. I have no problem with religion but practice it on your own time and not in PUBLIC schools. They want to have, (for years now) I guess, bible study for kids in public schools here. Thankfully that is not happening any time soon. It would be optional, but it still does not belong in school.
I can not imagine how that could be even considerd…

Good episode btw, poor Tom XD And apparently i’m quite the narcissist.

And I can not belive that I babbled for so long XD Sorry.

    Can’t wait for Monday! **

You can not allow not teaching evolution because of a persons faith, it’s not up to question. That’s like answering a question wrong in math and make a comeback with “No my religion says my answer is correct”

  • Bobby

I’m a little offended by Laura’s hosting. It’s not the fact that she differing views on subjects, but it’s the fact she makes the audience feel dumb for not supporting these things. I fast forward through the political discussions because she has to monopolize the conversation and then almost force her opinion to others. The thing is, I agree with most of her political beliefs, it’s just the way she goes about them.

  • Erica

took the quiz & i got a 13. not bad. but why the hell do you care if david letterman gets married? who cares if hes old? or whatever else he did. the guy is allowed to get married. & plenty of people have HEALTHY babies after the age of 40. my mom did. twice. plus, studies show that babies born to older moms are smarter. http://www.impactlab.com/2006/04/05/older-moms-smarter-babies/

  • Bob

I pretty much agree with you Bobby, but the this is, Laura’s pretty much the only one who knows about this things. OK, so the way she goes about conveying her views annoys the shit out of me too, but if she’s the only one who knows about, for example Darfur, then what can you do?

  • magicmarkers

I’m not sure how it is on other countries, but in the UK, we tend to study and debate intelligent design/creationism theories in RE, and study evolution and Darwinism, and it’s predessesors, in biology. I think this is a really good way of studying it – everyone get’s a say in things, and evolution isn’t taught in a dogmatic way as far as I can tell, but around here most people accept evolution as fact.
Great show, loved hearing from you guys again!

P.S I scored 36 on the quiz – and I was answering very honestly, trust me! However, I think there’s a distinction to be made – I don’t think I have a disorder just because of that, although maybe if it affected my life I would. But it doesn’t, and I can be modest and generally very non-narcissistic when I want to. So thanks for sharing that quiz, I found it really interesting!

  • magicmarkers

Also, I just wanted to say thankyou for the discussion about the Khmer Rouge. I had no idea what it was before this show, and it really touched my heart. Usually I’m not too affected by stuff like that – not that I don’t care, but I can distance myself from things quite well – but when you said that they used to teach children to torture people I almost burst into tears. I want to say basically what that email you read out at the start of this show said – thankyou for opening my eyes to these things. I tend not to watch/read the news, because I so often feel like it’s presented in a way that I can’t acces unles I’m a very intellectual person (I’m pretty smart, but I’m only 14!) so I really appreciate hearing my peer’s views on these things, and having it explained in an easy-to-understad and often humerous format!
And in response to some of the previous comments, I think laura’s hosting style rocks! (but maybe ‘cos I’m quite similar to her in regard to my behaviour)
Please bring back political bitches btw, I miss it!!

    thanks again xxx

  • Laura

I wasn’t aware there was any indication that anyone should feel dumb for supporting ‘these things’ (which things?). I’m not upset with people for not knowing about every world issue or cause – I’m upset when people know something is happening and fail to educate themselves. It also just so happens that this week’s politics segment included a bit of historical context, and seeing as I’m the one who put the discussion together, I’m not sure how appropriate it would have been to have another host present information for a section they aren’t responsible for maintaining. Perhaps it is a matter of perception, but please remember I wouldn’t be hosting the politics section if I weren’t passionate about it, meaning that, yes, I will get heated and exasperated much in the same way someone hosting tech or pop culture might be over a discussion there.

    Best,

    Laura

  • McKina

Wow. This episode was amazing! That phone call to Tom was amazing! Laura, good job with that! It took guts :)
As for the people commenting on Laura’s hosting, I think its fine. As she just said, she’s the one who puts it together so of course she is going to have a strong opinion on it since she is educated on the topic. I also don’t think that she is trying to make anyone feel dumb at all (atleast I don’t feel that way). She will simply explain and back up her ideas on the topic.
All in all, I give her alot of credit. Politics is such a heated topic, anyone willing to talk about contraversial items such as the ones talked about on the show deserves credit!
Good job Laura (and the rest of you on Smart Mouths)!
Looking forward to this coming Monday! :D

  • McKina

This episode was amazing! That phone call to Tom was priceless! Good job at that Laura, that took guts!
As for the people commenting on Laura’s hosting, I think she’s doing a great job! The reason that she has such strong opinions on the topics is that she is the one that puts the section together so she is educated on all the topics. I definitly do not think that she is trying to make anyone feel “dumb” in any way, shape or form (atleast thats how I feel). I think that she is simply stating facts that the general public may not know on the subject and backing up her opinion on these topics.
I give her alot of credit, seeing as politics is such a sensitive topic, to come out and talk about your views takes alot of guts. For this, I commend Laura.
Oh, and don’t think that I am trying to make you listen to the politics part of the podcast, do what you wish.
Once again, good job with the podcast (everyone on Smart Mouths)! And keep up the good work!
p.s- sorry about the longish post.

For the record, I think Laura is a wonderful host and I’m in awe of how knowledgeable, articulate and passionate she is about causes all over the world (this goes for Elysa too). I think it’s hugely preferable to have an opinionated, passionate host who is really interested in the topic they’re discussing (even if their opinion differs to yours, as having a second opinion can sometimes be a good thing) than to have a host who really couldn’t give a shit about what they’re talking about. I love the WTF news and pop culture segments, but it’s been the world news that has inspired me to do more with my Amnesty group to benefit others around the world. Plus, the political bitches rants are hilarious. Bring them back!!

Oh, and great show by the way. Poor, unfortunate Tom… :P

    Becky x :)

hey people, well here are my comments:

    1) in regard to the debate about creationism vs. evolution, i would like to say that it my opinion the problem with public schools (from my own experience of course) is that they are very VERY dogmatic. I am not affiliated with any religion, i dont believe in the so called “GOD”. I think schools need to ephasize that theories of evolution and the big bang etc, are just that, theories. I have found that teachers state these theories as if they are proven facts. In a way they are almost lying. To me the most important part of learning is learning to question things, to not take things for granted, or just because some “authority” told you.

    2) i absolutely loved the call to “Tom”!! it was hilarious! people need to do more shit like that! It was kind of weird at the end when he sounded like he was interested in what (he thought) Laura was offering. Hilarious though seriously.

  • McKina

hey sorry about that double post… I sent that first one and it didn’t show up right away so I typed a new one and sent that as well. so it’s not that I am insane… just my own confusion. sorry guys.

  • Celia

You guys were NOT lying about the cloudy with a chance of meatballs trailer…it kind of does suck. But I think kids will probably like it. I’m not 100% sold on the Where the Wild things are trailer eiter though, but maybe I will rent it when it comes out.

  • Andrew Mote

I can’t express sufficiently how appreciative I am to everyone who is a part of this podcast. You guys cover so many important, hard-hitting topics, and you’re only in to episode eight. As an eighteen-year-old type-one diabetic for coming up on ten years this month, I was a little nervous at first that the embryonic stem-cell research talk was going to offend me, or turn me off of the podcast, or something like that. That’s the only topic that just one or two words spoken about can get me going. But I kept my headphones on and listened with as open a mind as I could manage, and I felt a little stupid after the fact, because you guys covered the topic so well. The point I’m trying to make is that I’m extremely impressed with every single host for the maturity with which you cover everything you talk about, from gerbil abortions to stem-cell research. I also appreciate each of your senses of humor, and what they add to the show. There’s a line between what should be taken seriously and what can be joked about, but listening to Smart Mouths erases that line and reminds us that the world isn’t just black and white. Keep it up. :)

  • Melissa

I don’t know a whole lot about politics and world news, but I was really interested in hearing what you guys had to say about the Khmer Rouge. I first became aware of the genocide in Cambodia in reading a book called “First They Killed My Father.” I was wondering if any of you had ever read it. If you haven’t, I would highly recommend it (especially to Laura).

Also, I think the phone call to Tom was hilarious. I admire Laura’s bravery.

    Great show!

Also, when I first heard Matt and Micah’s score for the narcissm quiz I totally judged and thought those scores were way high but then I took the test myself – I scored an 18! I got very high scores for vanity, exploitativeness, and superiority. Whoops! Very low scores for authority and exhibitionism. I’m not so sure about this test…

Hey Smart Mouths you should really consider making a Myspace community as well. I too tried to migrate to Facebook afterwhile but I found myself coming back to Myspace because Facebook keeps changing everything.

  • Rebecca Jill

I love, love the show. I’m 34 and on the older end of the age spectrum of the show’s listeners, but every week I can’t wait for the next episode. I came to the show, because I’m also a listener of Mugglecast and Harry Potter Prognostications.

Anyway, I found this week’s show especially enjoyable. The phone call to Tom was freaking hilarious. I found myself yelling in the car while listening, “Call the number!”

I’m United Methodist and consider myself a liberal Mainline Protestant. My faith is very important to me, and I find that evolution does not contradict with my faith at all. I went to public school and found no problem with my science classes. It is more the conservative Christians, even within my own denomination, that support creationism being taught in school. I just find the creation story more a part of my faith story and want to leave that in church or to myself. I wouldn’t want to impose my faith on anyone else like that. I agree with Micah that if one religion’s creation story is going to be taught than they all should be, and that would just make science class ridiculous; it’s science class, not religion class.

Love Micah’s What the Fuck? News!

  • Leigha S.

I took that narcisitic quiz, and I scored a 9… I think, I don’t really know how to score it xP

  • Celia

I NEED a new episode guys…lol…I have a test coming up and you guys always help me get through studying…it’s become a new ritual. So I need something…Mugglecast, Smartmouths…I would even settle for Imprint at this point…but I NEED it! lmao.

  • Emily*

I finished listening it was soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo funny ! The hole Tom thing. My mom was yelling asking me what was funny but was on the floor laughing.lol in my opinon best show. only thing is i hope none of Laures ’s friend were listien! great show guys.

  • Bobby

I think you guys should change this whole “Out every Sunday” thing. I hate waiting D:

  • Beth

“Love you Forever” by Robert Munsch is something I read to my own kids! I read a great teen book last year called “Evolution, Me & Other Freaks of Nature” by Robin Brande. This book was so wonderful! The main character Mena was raised in a very conservative religion but before the school year, she did something that caused her “friends” from church to no longer talk to her. Because of this she is open to new friendships and a wonderful science teacher, Ms Shepherd who is teaching evolution. I was also raised relatively conservatively and kind of felt like a freak myself so this book was almost like reading a bit from my own past.

  • Sydney

You guys are so funny! this episode was great, expecially calling Tom! i took the quiz and i got 12 :] so i think thats good!
