Smart Mouths Book Club #4: Mockingjay
by Penny on Sep.05, 2010, under Episodes
After we read Suzanne Collins’ final book in the Hunger Games Series, Mockingjay, we sat down to give you our thoughts on the book and really the series as a whole. Join Elysa, Matt, Greg and Penny for this awesome book club discussion.
-SPOILER ALERT: If you haven’t read the book and don’t want to be spoiled, don’t listen!
-What were we anticipating from this book? How do we rate the books?
-The deaths….we jumped straight into that. We were especially broken up about one character’s death and as you’ll see we never really got over that throughout the episode.
-In our opinion, there was something in the book that was worse than death.
-As much as we loved the book, we thought it disappointed in some ways.
-But it also lived up to our expectations in many ways.
-We took some Twitter comments from all of you guys.

TBH the book was disappointing, especially at the end.
She should have made the book longer and not rush the story. :\

Well I wasn’t really disappointed in the book but I felt like it was kind of lacking something. I really enjoyed it but the way everyone scattered at the end. She’s not with her mom or with Gale. I like her and Peeta being together but it feels like everyone else kind of abandoned her. I don’t think I’m getting this across well but I just felt it was lacking something at the end. I did enjoy the book though and wasn’t disappointed overall.

I enjoyed the book but found it was extremely dragging in the beginning. Katniss was just wondering around thirteen and nothing much was really happening. I was anticipating Katniss going to the Capitol to rescue Peeta herself but she just stayed behind. I think this would have added more action near the beginning.

I’m with Greg on this one. Love the saga but it was toooooooooo rush’d. Not that another book would suffice but a few more pages would probably do (with more details).

I pretty much agree with almost everything you guys said. The book was definitely enjoyable, and I loved how realistic the events ended up being. It was of course sad about the deaths and the way things didn’t really end on any sort of “happily ever after” note but that was what made it seem more real and plausible. I do agree however that the ending wrapped up a little too quickly and there were plenty of scenes where we would have enjoyed much more elaboration. Overall though I liked it and am a big fan of the series as a whole. I really hope they don’t jack up the movie!

The lack of outrage from you guys about Cinna angered me. Right at the beginning, when you started with deaths and then things that disappointed you, I was screaming at my computer for someone to bring him up. I wanted to hear other people rage at the fact that one of the best characters in the first two books was just a complete afterthought. One line about him “probably” being dead? Come on! I was hoping he would show up at the end, but no, the ending was even more rushed. I can’t believe you guys almost didn’t mention him, and when you did, it was only for about 15 seconds right near the end. All the while you guys were complaining about other characters like Madge. Seriously? Bah.
Other than all the rushed stuff, it was a good book. It could have been much, much better though.

I agree with almost every thing, you guys said. I had the biggest problem with the end, most writters love their charitors as their friends… and want to give them the closer they deserve… yet Susana did not do so. *sigh* I would have even liked it more if every died(i know that pretty bold) but at least it would have given all of the charitors a just end… I dont know if you know this but Hunger Games is being read in middle school class rooms as part of the Lit. class. I know this because my boyfriends brother and best friends sister just read it in class. I thought u might want to know that. I dont see how Susana could just end it like that. I know JK Rolling gave each person Death and Life for a reason and she explained it and it followed the plot yet, Susana did not; Even Stephanie Myer who can really right knew to do justic to her charictors… well thanks for listen to my rant
